It provides a few hours of service on each charge, even with the LCD in use and "stop and go" recording and playback. It is superior to most other standard camcorder batteries. Naturally, as with many electronic devices, you want a backup battery so you can keep recording - there is no need to spend $75 or more on a different backup or a more powerful one.
