Conclusion: Inexpensive and works for me
Review: I just got this flash last week, just in time to use it on my Canon 350D for my engagement party. I felt the pictures I got turned out wonderful. I'm still trying to learn as I go how to use bounce flash and using the fold out flash cover, but over all the flash unit is easy to use. Just 2 buttons to play with. The on switch which you can set to ETTL metering and manual and manual soft flash. The 2nd button is the test flash button.
If you plan to just start learning about flash photography, I don't think you'll go wrong with the Sigma EF 500 ST. It's doesn't recharge the flash as fast as the Canon speedlight flashes, but it won't hurt your pocket either. I suggest practicing with this for now and if you're ready for more control and faster recharge time, then upgrade to the speedlite series flash kits.

Conclusion: Good value, but has some glitches
Review: I'm using this flash with my Canon Dig Rebel and Canon 30D, and I've found it to be a little unpredictable. There have been times where it simply will not fire with the E-TTL, but yet the "test" button makes it fire. Sometimes it automatically picks up the lens range, (e.g. 50mm), but sometimes it ignores it. I keep telling myself I need to read the manual again, but I'm not sure it is my error. When it works, it works great. But communication with my Canons has been hit and miss so far.
