Nikon Close-up Attachment Lenses are designed for use with any Nikkor Lens having an attachment size of 52mm or with R8 Super-Zoom lenses, to permit focusing at distances closer than the normal focusing distances of these prime lenses. The attachment lenses screw easily into the front of the prime lens, and have no effect what ever on the automatic diaphragm control of the prime lens or operation of the through-the-lens light meter. While they are designed for use with ordinary fixed focal length lenses, they are adaptable to any lens with an attachment size of 52mm. Close-up lenses are threaded on the front to accept filters or lens hoods when required. In general, the use of close-up lens results in a marked reduction in depth of field. For best results, stop down the prime lens to at least f/8 whenever possible.

Close-up attachment lenses no. 0,1 and 2 are recommended for use with lenses having a focal length of up to 55mm. Lenses no. 3T and 4T are two-element archromat lenses providing high image quality, and are intended primarily for 85mm to 200mm lenses. The greater the diopter value of the attachment lenses, the closer the subject can be approached. The longer the focal length of the lens used, the greater the magnification which can be achieved.
