What camera do I need?

We usually categorize Cameras in Point and Shoot Cameras and SLR (Single Lens Reflex) Cameras in accordance with their use.

Point and Shoot Cameras

Point and Shoot Cameras are easy to operate. Most functions operate automatically, but you can usually set them to manual control for more advanced uses.

Modern Point and Shoot Cameras pack an amazing Array of features in a very small package. Their small size makes them very convenient to carry. Small does not mean that these cameras take bad pictures though.

Point and Shoot Cameras are a worry-free, all in one solution for the amateur photographer. The optics are already included and all of this at a very modest price. The images they deliver are crisp and need very little enhancement.

Single Lens Reflex (SLR) Cameras

Many professionals who want the best possible picture quality, even at a higher price and more inconvenience, use SLR cameras. The viewfinder image is seen through the lens (hence SLR) through a system of mirrors or prisms. Composition and focus are thus more accurate.

The larger lens usually also allows larger image sensors with less noise and a shallower depth of field.

Modern SLR cameras now include similar features as Point and Shoot Cameras, but are still capable of very fast and accurate operation.
